Challenge Course Renovations, Expansions & Upgrades

Challenge Course Renovations, Expansions & Upgrades

Your course may still have plenty to offer, even if your program has outgrown its original design.

Maybe you want more activities, a different belay system, or a new zip line. Perhaps aging platforms need replacement, or your layout no longer fits the groups you serve or the kind of programing they want.

Challenge Design Innovations (CDI) helps owners evaluate, renovate, retrofit, and expand existing challenge courses, ropes courses, zip lines, and aerial adventure parks across the United States.

We also work on courses originally built by other companies.

Whether you have a specific improvement in mind or need help comparing options, we can help you determine a practical next step.

Make Your Existing Course Work for Your Program

Programs change. Participant numbers change. Equipment and operating systems change, too.

A course built for your organization years ago may need adjustments to support how you use it today.

Refresh an Aging Facility

Renovations can involve replacing selected structures, updating activities, improving platforms, or reworking parts of the course.

CDI can help evaluate what may be retained, what needs attention, and where replacement makes more sense.

Support New Activities and Participants

You may want more variety for returning groups, different challenge levels, or activities that better serve your participants.

We can explore changes around your program goals, participant needs, available space, staffing, and budget.

Course Additions, Expansions & Renovations

An improvement project can be as focused as replacing one element or as involved as redesigning a large portion of your facility.

Add Elements, Routes, and Attractions

Depending on your site and existing structures, potential additions may include:

  • New high or low challenge elements.
  • Additional aerial adventure routes.
  • Zip lines and suspended bridges.
  • New platforms or access structures.
  • Children’s adventure activities.
  • Climbing walls or bouldering features.

Adding activities can create more programming options. If your goal is greater capacity, we also consider participant flow, access points, supervision, and potential bottlenecks.

Rework Existing Features

Sometimes the most useful improvement is changing what you already have.

CDI can evaluate opportunities to modify layouts, replace aging components, improve staff and rescue access, reduce bottle necks, or adapt activities to different program needs.

Existing structures and connections need to be evaluated before new loads or features are introduced.

Belay System & Zip Line Brake Retrofits

Interested in changing how participants move through your course or arrive at a zip line landing?

A retrofit may be possible, but the system needs to fit the existing installation.

Existing Course Belay Systems

CDI can evaluate options such as Kanopeo Saferoller and EDELRID SMART BELAY X for suitable courses.

The review may include cable configurations, platforms, transitions, clearances, participant equipment, and operating procedures.

Zip Line Braking and Retrieval Systems

We can also evaluate existing zip lines for potential zipSTOP or ZipKEA installations.

Arrival speeds, braking distance, landing platforms, structural attachments, equipment, and manufacturer requirements all affect what is practical.

A system change may also require construction modifications, updated procedures, and staff training.

Should You Repair, Renovate, or Replace Your Course?

You do not need to know the answer before contacting CDI.

Compare the Available Options

A localized problem may call for a repair. A course that remains suitable for your program may benefit from selected renovations or additions.

For other facilities, partial or full replacement may be the more practical investment.

We help you compare options based on existing condition, available documentation, program goals, maintenance needs, and project cost.

Plan Improvements in Phases

If your budget does not support the full project at once, we can discuss whether improvements can be completed in phases.

Planning the broader project first can help identify which changes should happen together and how early work can accommodate future additions.

Planning Your Course Improvement Project

CDI brings experience in course design, construction, inspections, repairs, and staff training to existing-facility projects.

Start With Your Course and Your Goals

Helpful information includes:

  • Your location and course type.
  • Photos of the facility.
  • What you want to change and why.
  • Recent inspection reports and available drawings.
  • Your approximate budget.
  • Your preferred completion date.

You can still contact us if some of that information is unavailable. We can help identify what is needed to evaluate the project.

Prepare for Construction and Operation

Depending on the scope, your project may require site assessment, design, engineering coordination, manufacturer review, permitting, construction, inspections, updated documentation, and training.

We can discuss seasonal schedules and potential closures during planning so you understand how the work may affect your program

Course Renovation & Expansion Questions (FAQs)

Can CDI renovate a course built by another company?

Yes. CDI works with existing facilities built by other providers. We review the course, its condition, available documentation, and proposed changes to determine which services we can provide.

How much does a course renovation or expansion cost?

Cost depends on the existing facility and the work involved. Structures, system compatibility, engineering, site access, equipment, and training can all affect the budget.

Share your goals and any available course information with CDI. We can help define the project and develop pricing around the proposed scope.
