Greensboro Science Center - SKYWILD

Project Snapshot

SKYWILD stretches above the zoo and features seven distinct courses with 60 animal-inspired challenges—including ropes, bridges, zip lines, and balance elements—that encourage exploration and movement through the forest canopy.

Design Highlights

  • Seven courses, each themed after animal movements like waddling, leaping, crawling, or brachiating—blending adventure with subtle education about wildlife behaviors.

  • Three tiers of challenge levels, accommodating thrill-seekers and families alike.

  • Immersive canopy experience, offering a unique aerial view of the zoo and engaging physical interaction with nature.

Safety, Guest Flow & Operations

  • Participants get 2 hours on the course, which also includes general zoo admission. That makes SKYWILD a combined adventure and educational outing.

  • Participant guidelines: Minimum age is 8 years old, maximum weight limit is 250 lb. Children aged 8–10 must climb with a participant aged 16 or older at a 2:1 ratio. Closed-toe shoes and suitable clothing are required.

Why This Project Excels

  • Inclusive challenge levels: From casual families to dedicated adventure-seekers, everyone finds a course that fits their level.
  • Educational storytelling: Animal-inspired challenges help visitors learn through movement and play.
  • Long-running impact: Opened in 2015 and still going strong, demonstrating lasting quality and public engagement.
