7 North Carolina Zipline & Adventure Parks We’re Proud to Have Built

What makes the best zipline adventures in North Carolina? We think it's more than having the longest cable or the fastest ride. Great scenery, creative course features, and outstanding guides make the biggest difference. And we're proud to have designed and built many of North Carolina's standout zipline and aerial adventure parks.

We recently came across an article from Elk Hollow Resort about the best zipline adventures in North Carolina. It's always fun seeing courses we've worked on getting attention.

Here are seven North Carolina adventures listed in the article that we're especially proud of, along with a little behind-the-scenes knowledge about what makes them special.

7 North Carolina Zipline & Adventure Parks Built by CDI

1. The Gorge Zipline, Saluda, NC

The Gorge is probably one of the most recognized zipline courses we've built. It regularly shows up in "best of" lists and travel publications.

And the setting is hard to beat.

Guests fly above the Green River Gorge, with incredible views of the mountains and forest below. The steep terrain is a big part of what makes this course so special.

The Gorge is a great example of something we believe strongly. Sometimes the best attraction is the land itself. You just need to find the right way to let people experience it.

2. First Flight Adventure Park, Nags Head, NC

Here's something most guests probably don't realize.

First Flight Adventure Park was designed to look like a hurricane when viewed from above.

Pretty fitting for a course on the Outer Banks!

Instead of a traditional zipline tour, First Flight combines zip lines with aerial obstacles and climbing challenges. Guests get to choose their own path and test themselves along the way.

There's also a personal connection. The park is owned and operated by a former CDI builder.

It's pretty cool seeing someone who once helped us build courses now running an adventure park of their own.

3. The Swamp Park, Ocean Isle Beach, NC

Mountains are great for ziplining. But how about flying over a real swamp?

With alligators below!

That's exactly what makes The Swamp Park such a unique experience.

Guests travel above a natural coastal swamp, seeing an environment most people would never explore from that perspective.

It's not just another zipline through the trees. It's something you probably won't forget anytime soon.

And that's what we're trying to create when we design a course.

4. Wildwater Nantahala Gorge Adventure Center, Bryson City, NC

The Nantahala Gorge is already one of North Carolina's great outdoor destinations.

Wildwater takes advantage of that setting with zip lines, sky bridges, and other aerial features through the forest.

It's also a great place for visitors who want more than one adventure. With rafting and other outdoor activities in the area, you can make a whole day of it.

5. Sky Valley Zip Tours, Blowing Rock, NC

There's something special about seeing the Blue Ridge Mountains from above the trees.

Sky Valley gives guests a chance to experience that mountain setting while traveling through the forest canopy.

And that's a big part of what we love about zipline design. Finding ways to let people see places and views they'd have a hard time reaching on foot.

6. Adventure Center of Asheville, Asheville, NC

Not every adventure needs to happen miles from civilization.

The Adventure Center of Asheville offers ziplining and aerial activities close to downtown Asheville.

It's a great example of creating different experiences for different ages and abilities. Families can enjoy the outdoors together, even when everyone isn't ready for the same level of adventure.

7. SKYWILD at Greensboro Science Center, Greensboro, NC

SKYWILD takes a different approach to aerial adventure.

Instead of focusing on long zip lines, the course uses animal-inspired obstacles that challenge balance, movement, and problem-solving.

Located at the Greensboro Science Center, it combines physical adventure with a connection to the natural world.

Sometimes the most memorable part of an adventure park isn't flying through the air. It's figuring out how to get across the next obstacle!

So, What Actually Makes a Great Zipline Course?

After more than 45 years designing and building challenge courses, zip lines, and adventure parks, we've developed a few opinions.

Scenery beats speed.

We see courses advertise their longest line, highest platform, or fastest speed all the time.

Those things are fun. No question.

But we'd argue the best zipline experiences take you somewhere you'd never get to see otherwise.

Over a gorge. Through a forest canopy. Across a swamp.

Those are the views you remember.

Great guides can make or break the experience.

You can build an incredible course. Beautiful setting. Great design. Everything done right.

But the guides are the ones who bring it to life.

A great guide makes nervous guests comfortable, keeps everyone laughing, and helps people enjoy the adventure.

In our opinion, great guides can more than double the enjoyment of a really good course.

Variety makes a big difference.

Zip lines are fun. But sky bridges, rappels, climbing elements, and other challenges make the experience even better.

Sometimes those little extras become the things people talk about most.

Thinking About Building Your Own Zipline Adventure?

There's no single formula for a great zipline course.

The Gorge, First Flight, and The Swamp Park couldn't be more different. And that's exactly the point.

At Challenge Design Innovations, we design and build courses around the site, the people who will use them, and the experience the owner wants to create.

Because the goal isn't just to build a zipline.

It's to build something people will remember.
