What’s the Best Helmet for Zip Lines and Aerial Adventure Parks?

For most commercial zip lines, challenge courses, and aerial adventure parks, our first choice is the Petzl PANGA.

It fits a wide range of guests, adjusts fast, holds up well under heavy use, and was actually designed for group programs. It fits head sizes from 48 to 61 cm, about 18.9 to 24 inches.

But no helmet fits everyone.

We also recommend keeping a few Fusion Titan Jumbo helmets on site for participants who need a larger helmet or more crown space.

And one more thing.

Don’t buy helmets based on price alone.

The Best Zip Line Helmet Is Made for Group Use

This gets missed all the time.

There are some great climbing helmets that I would never buy for a commercial zip line or aerial adventure park.

Why?

They were designed for one person.

A private owner adjusts their helmet, gets it comfortable, and may barely touch the adjustment again.

At a commercial course, that adjustment system might get changed 10, 15, or 30 times in a day.

That is a completely different job.

We had a client buy a very good helmet from a legitimate manufacturer. Nothing was wrong with the helmet itself.

It just wasn’t made for group use.

The adjustment dial in the back started breaking. After about a year, they ended up replacing nearly the entire fleet.

That gets expensive fast.

Why We Usually Recommend the Petzl PANGA

For most operations, the PANGA checks the boxes we care about.

It fits heads from about 18.9 to 24 inches. The adjustment is quick. The shell is tough. And Petzl designed it specifically for group use.

The headband/cradle is also removable and replaceable. So if an adjustment component wears out, you may be able to replace that part instead of throwing away an otherwise good helmet.

Petzl currently lists the PANGA as CE EN 12492 and UIAA certified.

For us, the combination of fit range, durability, easy adjustment, replaceable parts, and group-use design makes the Petzl PANGA the best all-around choice for most zip lines and aerial adventure parks.

What About Guests Who Need a Larger Helmet?

The PANGA fits most people.

Most isn’t everyone.

We recommend keeping larger helmets available for guests who need more circumference, more crown space, or extra room for their hair or head covering.

Our usual choice is the Fusion Titan Jumbo.

The Titan Jumbo is for head sizes from 21 to 26 inches.

You may only pull those helmets out a few times a month.

Have them anyway.

A participant shouldn’t have to sit out because every helmet in your gear room is basically the same size.

Please Don’t Buy Random Amazon Helmets

We see this more than we should.

An operator needs 20 helmets, finds something online for half the price, sees a few safety claims in the listing, and orders them.

That can be a bad bet.

Some come from brands you’ve never heard of. A year later, the company may be gone. Replacement parts don’t exist. Warranty help doesn’t exist. And you may have very little confidence in the testing behind the claims.

Buy from established manufacturers.

And buy from a vendor who actually understands public zip lines, challenge courses, and aerial adventure parks.

They should know the difference between a good individual helmet and a good group-use helmet. And they should still be there when you need replacement parts, warranty help, or service.
